Art

As a school, we believe that Art plays a vital role in encouraging children to develop their curiosity as well as a place for children to learn to trust their ideas themselves and to explore their creativity. At Little Digmoor, we provide every child to be exposed to a broad, rich, contemporary & diverse curriculum. It is our intent to inspire all children, regardless of ethnicity, culture, religion, home language, family background, learning difficulties, disabilities, gender or ability to gain a love for creativity and participating in art and to really believe in their own artistic abilities.

At Little Digmoor, we believe that art helps children to develop creative problem- solving skills that enable children to develop their fine and gross motor skills, communication skills and social skills. We also believe that art supports children with taking risks, ‘having a go’, decision making and feeling that they have a sense of worth. Having all of these skills enable children to develop great talents within our curriculum such as drawing, painting and sculpting as well as other areas of development children may occur.

As a school, we create as many different kinds of opportunities as possible so that each child can find the area which they are passionate about. That means covering lots of different disciplines, techniques, materials and approaches. We are confident that our curriculum provides a balance with progression of knowledge and skills woven throughout. It’s our aim that by the time every child leaves primary school they can feel as if they have found an area of the visual arts that is relevant and engaging to them. This may be through drawing, or making, designing, or talking about art.  We also understand the importance of giving children rich learning opportunities by exploring the historical importance behind art.

We have chosen to follow the Access Art scheme because their curriculum is designed around the idea that art is far more than a series of technical skills. The AccessArt’s holistic curriculum nurtures creative thinking skills and helps ensure our children at Little Digmoor learn through art, as well as about art. By combining technical skills with contextual and conceptual understanding our curriculum helps ensure every pupil feels entitled to embrace their own creativity as something which is important to them, and something which is valued by society. The AccessArt Scheme provides clearly-sequenced units and lessons with week-by-week support for each year group. There are lesson plans, a clear learning progression, key vocabulary, a spiral curriculum with six pathways and historical links as well as engaging resources to support every lesson. The AccessArt curriculum also provides key learning and outcomes with 'I Can' statements for each pathway.

Our Scheme follows a spiral approach to learning, with children revisiting, building and extending their knowledge and skills. Teachers adapt their teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of the children they teach. The AccessArt curriculum states that each child will meet each activity at their own level. Because there is plenty of freedom in each activity and the emphasis is on exploration there is plenty of space for more able children to stretch themselves.

Children’s art work is displayed in many various forms.
